Finally, five conclusions of geostrategic rigor are formulated to synthesize the current relevance of this discipline in the contemporary international arena.
Genesis, Definition, and Historical Evolution of Military Geography
Military geography is the analytical and applied discipline that studies the dialectical interaction between the geographic environment—with its physical, human, climatological, and spatial elements—and the conduct of military operations, national defense, and the design of State strategy.
Far from being reduced to simple topography or tactical cartography, it constitutes a doctrinal body that evaluates how terrain characteristics condition maneuver, the deployment of warlike power, supply lines, and the projection of force.
Historically, military geography has been the foundation for the development and survival of peoples. At the dawn of civilization, the establishment of the first human settlements in Mesopotamia, the banks of the Nile, or the Indus valleys depended on geographic-military considerations: the identification of natural defenses (e.g., mighty rivers, swamps, mountain gorges) against nomadic invasions and the protection of water sources and fertile lands.
As tribal structures evolved into consolidated city-states and empires, the ability to map the environment, dominate strategic passes, and calculate marching times determined the life or extinction of entire communities. The security provided by the mastery of geographic space allowed for social stability, the flourishing of commerce, and the consolidation of state institutions.
From Military Geography to the Birth of Geopolitics
For centuries, empirical knowledge of the terrain and the progressive construction of charts and maps were predominantly military in nature, given the very nature of humanity's socio-economic development.
However, in the 19th century, with the formalization of the social sciences and the consolidation of the nation-state, this technical knowledge underwent a profound metamorphosis. The need to administer vast colonial territories and defend national borders prompted the transition from military geography toward political geography, which formally analyzed the relationship between territorial divisions, government institutions, and populations.
From that turning point, concepts of other geographies began to emerge randomly, addressing cultural, social, and economic issues, etc.
This process culminated in the birth of geopolitics, a term coined by Rudolf Kjellén and developed by thinkers such as Friedrich Ratzel, Halford Mackinder, Alfred Thayer Mahan, Karl Haushofer, and Nicholas Spykman.
Fundamental geopolitical theories—such as Mackinder's Heartland theory (the Eurasian continental heart), Mahan's Sea Power, or Spykman's Rimland theory—are, in essence, strategic and doctrinal extrapolations derived from military geography applied on a planetary scale. Geopolitics took from military geography the immutable principle that space, physical barriers, and lines of communication determine political destiny and the correlation of power among great powers.
Commercial Security, Strategic Security, and the Training of Statesmen
Military geography has exerted a decisive influence on safeguarding international trade circuits and the vital interests of States in the following aspects:

2. Protection of maritime and land lines of communication (SLOCs/LOCs): The global security architecture rests on the ability to project military power to shield energy routes, submarine fiber optic cables, and intercontinental railway corridors.
3. Security of strategic resources: The location of hydrocarbon deposits, rare minerals, water reserves, and rare earths demands constant terrain analysis to prevent hybrid threats, insurgencies, or interstate disputes.
Intrinsically, military geography is the formative matrix of the well-structured statesman and strategist. A political or military leader devoid of spatial understanding is incapable of formulating major State directives. The geographic discipline teaches how to dimension distance in terms of logistical time, interpret the limitations imposed by orography, and convert geographic weaknesses into tactical and operational advantages. It forms a mind capable of articulating diplomacy, economy, and armed force into a harmonic plan of spatial maneuver.
Multidisciplinary Interaction of Military Geography
Military geography does not operate in isolation; it interacts systemically with the different branches of geographic science to offer a comprehensive appreciation of the situation:
1. With Physical Geography: This is its primary anchor. Altimetry, hydrography, soil geology, and climatology condition the trafficability of armored vehicles, the effectiveness of air support, and the viability of fortifications.

Hannibal Barca: His colossal crossing of the Alps in 218 BC against the power of Rome required prior geographic reconnaissance of gorges, mountain passes, the hostility of local tribes, and climatological adaptation for his troops and elephant infantry.
Wars of antiquity: Clashes between Medes and Persians, and Pharaonic campaigns in the Levant were subject to the control of river valleys and defiles such as the Megiddo Pass.
